Finding Your Sweet Spot

Jocelyn Leatherwood | NOV 16, 2025

When I started lifting weights again after dealing with a back issue, I was cautious. I didn’t want to reinjure myself, so I took care to listen to my body. But truthfully I wasn’t so sure I could trust what by body was telling me. Every time I lifted weights, I’d feel sore the next day and not in a "good" muscle soreness-type of way, so I’d back off for a while. Then I’d try again, feel sore again, and repeat the cycle.

Eventually, I realized I was skipping something important. I was pretty good about warming up, but in my rush to get my workout done and move on with my day, I wasn’t stretching afterwards. That might have worked for me years ago, but it clearly wasn’t working anymore. Once I added in a cool down, I no longer felt lingering pain. That small change made a big difference.

Our bodies need stress to stay strong. Muscles, bones, fascia, and even our joints thrive with the right amount of challenge. But without rest, or with too much intensity, our tissues become irritated, inflamed, or overly fragile. The same goes for our minds. Constant go-go-go without rest can lead to burnout. But doing too little can leave us feeling disconnected, unmotivated, or stiff physically and emotionally.

So how do we find that sweet spot?

This is where yoga and mindfulness come in. On the yoga mat, we learn to sense the difference between productive effort and strain. We notice when a pose feels spacious and alive and when it crosses into tension or collapse. We learn to stay present with discomfort, but not ignore pain. And over time, we bring those lessons into our daily lives.

The sweet spot isn’t a fixed place. It shifts from day to day, moment to moment. Some days we’re ready to hold Warrior II a little longer or breathe deeper in a twist. Other days, Child’s Pose might be the strongest choice we make. What matters is staying curious, tuning in, and responding with care.

So whether you’re lifting weights, practicing yoga, or simply navigating a busy week, remember: your body and mind need both stress and rest. Not too much. Not too little. Just enough.

That’s the sweet spot.
